Celebrating 40 years in Space

In April 1972, The European Space Tribology Laboratory (ESTL) was formed to provide expert knowledge, services and products in tribology (friction, wear and lubrication) for all European spacecraft.
Keeping complex mechanical systems moving for many years in a unique but hostile environment such as space is very challenging and ESTL has contributed towards many if not all of the European spacecraft that has been built and launched over the last four decades. The UK Space sector is largely described as a genuine success story, contributing £7.5 billion to the economy and supporting 85,000 jobs.
ESTL celebrated their accomplishments and 40 year birthday with a space themed birthday cake at a UK Spacecraft Mechanism Workshop in their Warrington office. Organised by the Technology Strategy Board, the workshop was attended by representatives from the European and UK Space Agencies, as well as by the UK’s major spacecraft manufacturers Astrium and Surrey Satellites. With so many experts present, the discussion centred on the current developments in spacecraft mechanism technology and identifying future needs and opportunities.
ESTL is making a difference and it counts.
