Half year budget-beating performance for ESR Technology

The financial performance of ESR Technology in the first half of this financial year has been strong. We are ahead of budget across virtually all of the indicators against which we measure our results. In short, ESR Technology is flourishing with the right structure and focus under Hyder ownership.

Our recipe for success has included:

  • Reviewing the organisational structure
  • Maintaining a clear strategic focus
  • Targeting the right work at the right margins
  • Enhancing the culture of project management to help ensure delivery to agreed budgets

We have moved to a position where many support functions are provided by Hyder and also made the difficult decision to stop providing aviation safety consultancy. Although challenging, these changes have been instrumental in positioning ESR Technology for profitable growth.

Our focus on targeting new opportunities with specific clients has paid off. A good example is our recent appointment to the Maersk Oil UK Ltd technical safety framework. This prestigious win paves the way for future growth in the North Sea oil and gas market.

We are also very pleased to be supporting our colleagues in Hyder on a variety of projects. One of these includes the design and manufacture of a fuel element debris dissolution pilot plant to support nuclear power station decommissioning.

Providing friction and wear (tribology) solutions and mechanism design for the rapidly growing space sector is a particular specialism within ESR Technology. We operate the European Space Tribology Laboratory for the European Space Agency and are also involved in some exciting mechanism projects. This includes participation in development of the Solar Orbiter’s SPICE instrument. This mission will provide a close-up study of our sun and the heliosphere in which the Earth orbits.

Going forward we will maintain this winning strategy by:

  • Creating and maintaining an environment where work is fun and fulfilling for our staff
  • Continuing with our strategic key account management
  • Cross-selling the full range of Hyder and ESR capabilities to key accounts
  • Cementing our presence in the Aberdeen oil and gas market
  • Raising our internal and external profile by celebrating good news
  • Recruiting to support growth across our business

ESR’s Managing Director Dr Simon Randall commented: “I am delighted with these results. They have been made possible by the commitment and capability of our people and the full support of Hyder Consulting, which I am confident will continue into 2013 and beyond”.
