About Us

ESR Technology is a dynamic, forward-thinking and growing SME with a workforce of 80 employees. Our clients shape the future with us as partners in success.

We are pioneering sustainable solutions with over 50 years of expertise in tribology, materials, non-destructive testing (NDT) and safety & risk management. Our partnerships with major organisations involved in sustainable energy production, transport infrastructure, and space technologies are a testament to our unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence.

Our work

Our expertise in tribology, engineering, materials, and safety and risk helps our clients to work confidently and manage the engineering challenges of designing, constructing and operating the critical assets.

We specialise in delivering independent technical and engineering consultancy tailored to diverse industries and sectors.

Our commitment to innovation is evident through three centers of excellence that we operate including European Space Tribology Laboratory (ESTL), National Centre of Tribology (NCT), and HOIS , driving cutting-edge research and development (R&D) initiatives.

Furthermore, our dedicated Safety and Risk Management group ensures the safety and sustainability of our clients’ critical assets and operations. We offer comprehensive support and expertise in effectively managing risks to enhance overall operational resilience.

Our collaborative efforts continue to set benchmarks, with a focus on innovation, reliability, and the enduring success of our clients in an ever-evolving technological landscape.

We help our clients drive down operational costs, enhance safety, and promote sustainability in their projects through our expert engineering consultancy support.

Currently, we support energy asset owners and operators to drive the shift towards sustainable power and fuel production. Our role includes aiding in carbon capture, leveraging hydrogen, advancing cleaner energy solutions, and facilitating digitilisation and technology integration.

Simultaneously, we’re dedicated to enhancing infrastructure safety, resolving instances of failure, and mitigating risks in transport and space technologies. Through proactive engineering and non-destructive testing, we aim to extend asset lifecycles, minimising waste, cut costs, reduce operational downtime, and ensure the safety of people and environments.

History & Heritage

The History of ESR Technology’s
Centres and Sectors

  • 01/ Birth of Tribology and NCT

  • 02/ Creation of ESTL

  • 03/ Establishment of NNDTC and HOIS

  • 04/ Formation of SRM Group

  • 05/ Formation of AEA Technology

  • 06/ ESR Technology

  • 01/ Birth of Tribology and NCT

In 1966, the groundbreaking ‘Jost Report’ highlighted the financial benefits of applying tribological principles. This led to the birth of Tribology as a study of friction, wear, and lubrication, giving rise to three tribology centers in the UK, including the National Centre of Tribology (NCT). With 50 years of experience, NCT offers independent and confidential tribology consultancy, testing, and expertise across various industrial sectors.

  • 02/ Creation of ESTL

In the early 1970s, the European Space Research Organisation entrusted the National Centre of Tribology (NCT) with establishing the European Space Tribology Laboratory (ESTL). Today, ESTL remains Europe’s hub for space tribology, providing analysis, consultancy, and training. It actively engages in mission-focused tribology R&D, applying lubrication to precision components for space and vacuum applications.

  • 03/ Establishment of NNDTC and HOIS

The National Non-Destructive Testing Centre (NNDTC) originated in 1967, advancing NDT research and technology transfer. HOIS (Harwell Offshore Inspection Service) emerged in 1982 within NNDTC, addressing asset integrity issues in the offshore oil and gas industry. HOIS is a well respected joint industry project that focuses on assessing advanced NDT technologies and producing good practice guidance for challenging inspection applications across energy industry.

  • 04/ Formation of SRM Group

The Safety & Risk Management (SRM) Group traces its roots to the 1970s in the Safety and Reliability Directorate of the UKAEA. It pioneered major hazard risk assessment techniques, later expanding into non-nuclear industries. The SRM Oil and Gas business, born in the late 1980s, excels in major hazard risk assessment globally. Integrated into ESR Technology in 2005, these centers of excellence combine their expertise to provide independent technical consultancy, products, and services to loyal clients worldwide.

  • 05/ Formation of AEA Technology

In 1996, AEA Technology emerged as a privatised offshoot of UKAEA, bringing expertise in diverse areas such as tribology, non-destructive testing, and quantified risk assessments. This transformation marked a significant shift towards a more commercially oriented approach, expanding our reach to benefit a broader range of industries and clients with our extensive diverse expertise and knowledge.

  • 06/ ESR Technology

In 2005, ESR Technology was formed out of a divestment by AEA Technology , creating an Engineering (NCT, ESTL and HOIS) and Safety & Risk business.

In 2016, ESR Technology becomes an owner managed small and medium sized enterprise (SME).
