The History of ESR Technology’s Centres and Sectors
In 1966, the groundbreaking ‘Jost Report’ highlighted the financial benefits of applying tribological principles. This led to the birth of Tribology as a study of friction, wear, and lubrication, giving rise to three tribology centers in the UK, including the National Centre of Tribology (NCT). With 50 years of experience, NCT offers independent and confidential tribology consultancy, testing, and expertise across various industrial sectors.
In the early 1970s, the European Space Research Organisation entrusted the National Centre of Tribology (NCT) with establishing the European Space Tribology Laboratory (ESTL). Today, ESTL remains Europe’s hub for space tribology, providing analysis, consultancy, and training. It actively engages in mission-focused tribology R&D, applying lubrication to precision components for space and vacuum applications.
The Safety & Risk Management (SRM) Group traces its roots to the 1970s in the Safety and Reliability Directorate of the UKAEA. It pioneered major hazard risk assessment techniques, later expanding into non-nuclear industries. The SRM Oil and Gas business, born in the late 1980s, excels in major hazard risk assessment globally. Integrated into ESR Technology in 2005, these centers of excellence combine their expertise to provide independent technical consultancy, products, and services to loyal clients worldwide.
In 2005, ESR Technology was formed out of a divestment by AEA Technology , creating an Engineering (NCT, ESTL and HOIS) and Safety & Risk business.
In 2016, ESR Technology becomes an owner managed small and medium sized enterprise (SME).
Fluid Lubricant Testing on the Advanced Bearing Test Rig
An important aspect in mechanism design is the selection of the appropriate lubricant for given operating conditions. In the case of fluid lubricants, it is important to understand the lubrication regime a given application will be operating in.
Investing in a More Sustainable Future
At ESR Technology, we recognise that our established 65-year success as an engineering consultancy group depends not only on technical expertise we provide to our clients but also on how responsibly we operate internally as a business. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations are key to influencing both how we run our business and how we support clients operating in safety critical and high reliability sectors.
CABARET v3194 Update is Available
CABARET, ESTL’s own bearing analysis software, having its roots in rocket engine turbopump development (hence its name – Code for Analysis of BeArings in Rocket Engine Turbopumps), has a 35-year history of serving the specific analysis requirements of the European space industry, with the funding and support of the European Space Agency (ESA[M).
