ESMATS 2025 Presentation Previews
We’re excited to announce that ESTL and ESR Space will both be presenting at the upcoming European Space Mechanisms and Tribology Symposium (ESMATS) 2025.
We’re excited to announce that ESTL and ESR Space will both be presenting at the upcoming European Space Mechanisms and Tribology Symposium (ESMATS) 2025.
This September, the European Space Tribology Laboratory (ESTL) will once again participate in the European Space Mechanisms and Tribology Symposium (ESMATS).
ESR Technology is proud that, on behalf of ESA, it operates the European Space Tribology Laboratory (ESTL) that has provided continuous friction and lubrication support to ESA and to the wider European space community for all of ESA’s 50 years… and more.
ESR Technology is proud to share that at our ESTL (European Space Tribology Laboratory) experts have contributed, along with ESA, Materials GmbH and Kompetenzzentrum Tribologie Mannheim, to the recently published article in Scientific Reports: “Development of novel lubricant formulation for cleanroom and vacuum application”
Andrew Gibson, Head of Space Mechanisms, attended the 25th Anniversary Meeting of the MOPITT to celebrate Long-lived Space Mechanisms for Monitoring Pollution from Space.
ESTL are pleased to announce that we will be presenting two Space Tribology training courses this September in conjunction with the ESMATS 2025 conference.

ESR Technology is proud to recognise the exceptional career of Dave Forster, Assembly Manager in our Space team. This month, Dave marks his 44th year at the company, a testament to his knowledge in the field of space engineering.
At ESR Technology, we believe it is important to share and celebrate the achievements of our expert team of staff. Recently, one of our Research Engineers from our space team, Matt Simpson, graduated from Loughborough University with a PhD.

Until now, no guidance has been available for those seeking to employ a new oil or grease product in a space mechanism intended for flight qualification. However, a guideline document (ESA-ESTL-TM-0375 01- “Guidelines for Qualification of New Fluid Lubricants”) recently released by ESTL and available in ESTL’s Members’ Area aims to provide clarity concerning the lubricant verification and validation prerequisites ultimately to be required by the European Space Agency (ESA) in this situation.
