When we examine bearings as part of a failure investigation or as a routine assessment, grease analysis is an important step, revealing issues like water ingress, debris contamination, or degradation of the base oil.
Most people have an intuition that putting a notch in a part weakens it. In some circumstances, a notch can actually strengthen a component, although not usually in a desirable way
We’re proud to share the news that Omar Shah, one of our NCT team members, has achieved Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
Omar Shah from our National Centre of Tribology attended the All Energy 2025 conference in Glasgow last week, engaging with engineers, innovators, and investors across the renewable energy sector.
ESR Technology is delighted to share some fantastic news from the National Centre of Tribology (NCT). One of our newest recruits, David MacMillan, has successfully passed his PhD viva.

2024 was a busy year for renewable energy across all of ESR’s divisions, and already in 2025 we have a full pipeline of new enquiries on everything from R&D to failures. Here are a few of the things we have been working on.
Our NCT team specialises in bespoke rig design tailored to meet the unique requirements of our clients.
ESR’s National Centre of Tribology (NCT) has recently been involved in a joint research project with a data science company to develop a new cutting-edge data-driven system that will provide real-time condition monitoring of rail networks.
Bolted connections are ubiquitous in everything from the high-tech mechanisms that ESR designs for spacecraft through to the hobby projects and 3D-printed widgets many of our engineers make at home.
ESR’s Engineering Consultant, Omar Shah, shared his insight on how his DIY work at home turned into some engineering enlightenment.

Recently, our NCT team welcomed Syeda Fatima, a mechanical engineering graduate, as a junior engineer on an internship placement.
This week, ESR Technology’s National Centre of Tribology (NCT) team had the pleasure of attending the Marine Energy Wales 2024 conference in Swansea. Meeting with some of the minds behind Wales’ and indeed the UK’s world leading innovations in marine renewable energy, the passion and belief of the designers and developers in the future of the Morlais project and Welsh renewable marine energy was palpable.
A failure is something as complex as a gas turbine can be daunting to approach. Working in industries as diverse as medical, agri-tech, and off-shore renewables, the equipment we are examining may be something we have never encountered before, but with a systematic approach and our talented team of engineers and scientists, we are almost always able to deliver insight into the root cause.
