HOIS Highlights 2025-2026

POD & Sizing Trials for Internal Corrosion

Background

Within HOIS, the most recent study assessing the probability of detecting internal corrosion in pipes using various NDT techniques was conducted over 20 years ago. As NDT technology has progressed significantly since then, there has been interest in obtaining updated information on current detection and sizing performance of previous, as well as more recently developed techniques.

The study is planned over 3 years, with the test samples comprising a mixture of 10” Sch. 20 and Sch. 80 pipes. The pipes will contain internal defects with a range of depths and extents manufactured using spark erosion.

Trials will be hosted by ESR Technology and will include established detailed methods such as corrosion mapping as well as faster screening methods like M-skip. Analysis of the results will include comparison of the POD, sizing accuracy and speed of scanning (in a lab environment).

Progress Update

Sample manufacture has been completed and the trials have started. To date, several trials have been completed, including two phased array corrosion mapping trials, two MFL trials. Several trials are also planned to be completed before the end of September. The aim is complete all analysis of the results before the November 2026 HOIS meeting.
