The safe operation of high-hazard pressure vessels requires regular inspection to confirm the internal condition of the item. Historically, this has been achieved through internal visual inspection (IVI) where shutdown of the vessel is required to allow entry. NII however, offers a compelling alternative to costly and potentially hazardous intrusive inspections (IVI). By conducting inspections while vessels remain operational, NII significantly enhances production uptime.
The NII process is essentially a 4-step process:
- Firstly, in the assessment phase the vessel’s inspection history, degradation threats, and design and operating data are reviewed to determine the suitable inspection strategy.
- A work scope is then developed with respect to NDT technique selection, inspection locations and reporting requirements.
- The inspection phase is then carried out to fully meet all requirements.
- Finally, the process of evaluation is carried out and any integrity and reinspection recommendations made.
