At ESR Technology, we recognise that our established 65-year success as an engineering consultancy group depends not only on technical expertise we provide to our clients but also on how responsibly we operate internally as a business. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations are key to influencing both how we run our business and how we support clients operating in safety‑critical and high‑reliability sectors.
We support clients to meet their ESG goals as the output of our specialist knowledge and expertise that benefits clients across energy, infrastructure, transport, nuclear, space and advanced engineering sectors. With our independent project delivery, we provide clients assurance to meet their sustainability, safety, resilience and good governance needs at the research, design, operation, life extension and end of life stages of their assets and operations. ESR work for our clients, contributes directly to measurable ESG outcomes of safer, more efficient and more resilient assets that protect the environment.
As part of our internal ESG commitment, ESR Technology are taking practical steps to reduce our carbon footprint and improve the sustainability of our operations, with one initiative being the installation of a 166kWp solar PV system at our Warrington office facilities.
Our Environmental Responsibility in Practice
As a company, we recognise that our building and energy use contribute to our overall environmental impact. The installation of solar panels marks a significant step towards reducing reliance on grid‑supplied electricity and increasing the proportion of renewable energy used across our operations.
The system is designed to generate approximately 144,673 kWh of electricity annually, which will be used 24*7 by our laboratories, including clean room operated at a constant temperature for development and validation testing. The solar panels will cover all the available roof area and contribute around 22% of our total annual energy consumption by kilowatt‑hour. This level of self‑sufficiency not only reduces carbon emissions associated with our day‑to‑day operations but also improves the long‑term resilience and efficiency of our energy use.
This initiative forms part of a broader approach to environmental responsibility at ESR Technology, which includes monitoring energy consumption, encouraging efficient use of resources, and considering sustainability in facilities planning and future investment decisions.
Supporting a Responsible Engineering Sector
As an engineering consultancy working across safety, risk management, inspection, and advanced engineering disciplines, ESR Technology has a responsibility to support industries that are safe, resilient and sustainable. Our ESG approach aligns closely with the work we deliver for clients.
Our wider environmental contribution is delivered through client projects, including support for energy transition initiatives, prevention of environmental harm through safety and risk management, and asset life extension through tribology, materials engineering and non‑destructive testing. These activities reduce waste, embodied carbon and operational risk while improving asset reliability.
By implementing sustainability initiatives within our own organisation, we aim to reflect the same standards of responsibility and forward‑thinking that we expect in the projects we support.
Going Forward
The installation of the solar panels is just one example of how ESR Technology is demonstrating ESG principles in action. We intend to continue reviewing and developing our ESG approach as a company to reduce environmental impact, strengthen social responsibility, and maintain high standards of governance as our organisation evolves.
