Despite corrosion under insulation being one of the biggest degradation issues in the energy industry, in-service inspection that does not require removal of cladding and insulation is often still a challenge.
Pulsed eddy current testing has been commercially available for 20+ years and the effectiveness in detecting corrosion under insulation (CUI) has been assessed in two major HOIS blind trials. Prior to the start of the project, some members believed that PEC performance could be further improved, although one vendor considered that their PEC results in HOIS blind trials exceeded their prior expectations.
As a result, the following activities were proposed to gain a better understanding of the key parameters that impact the performance and have led to updated HOIS industry guidance which is publicly available thanks to the NZTC funding.
