Celebrating Women in STEM at ESR Technology

5th February 2025

According to Engineering UK, only 15.7% of professional engineers in the UK are female. At ESR Technology, we are proud to have a diverse team of female engineers, consultants, and scientists contributing across all four business units. We believe in celebrating and acknowledging women’s contributions in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Recently, our NCT team welcomed Syeda Fatima, a mechanical engineering graduate, as a junior engineer on an internship placement. Bringing Syeda on board not only provides her with valuable industry experience to support her career development but also contributes to the growth of the NCT team by enabling us to take on additional work with the help of an extra team member.

About Syeda

Syeda recently graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from University College London (UCL). During her time at university, she also completed a placement year at Red Bull Racing & Red Bull Technology in Milton Keynes. Additionally, the Royal Academy of Engineering recognised Syeda as an Engineering Leaders Scholar. The NCT team selected Syeda for her valuable experience and the opportunity to further develop her skills through involvement in a range of new projects that may be outside her previous experience.

Junior Engineer Role

The role of junior engineer with the NCT team has provided multiple opportunities for Syeda to get involved. Syeda has worked on the root cause analysis of traction motor bearing failure. This included the examination of bearings using various methods to determine the cause of failure and collating results in a report. She has also been involved in designing and conducting mechanical tests to analyse component configuration for rail applications and tribology testing and results analysis.

The Importance of Women in STEM

STEM fields have historically been male-dominated, but that is changing rapidly. The women here at ESR Technology bring diverse perspectives, innovative ideas, and unique problem-solving approaches to the table, making vital contributions to advancing technology and solutions. Encouraging women to pursue careers in STEM is essential for building a more inclusive, equitable, and progressive future for all.
