Fire Safety Support for Buildings and Transport
In addition to our fire and explosion work for major hazard facilities, we also carry out fire safety studies in the building and transport sectors, including rail, road and marine infrastructure. In these sectors, our fire safety capabilities include:
- Development of fire and evacuation strategies, e.g. in support of Crossrail 2 and other major infrastructure developments.
- Advice to clients regarding compliance with relevant fire regulations, standards and guidance, such as the Fire Safety Order (2005), Approved Document B, and BS 9999.
- Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling of compartment fire/smoke movement using the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) software developed by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST);
- Two-zone compartment fire/smoke modelling using NIST’s CFAST software;
- Standalone fire/smoke calculations using engineering correlations;
- Qualitative fire risk assessment, e.g. as per the Fire Safety Order;
- Dynamic evacuation calculations using our in-house model EGRESS;
- Static evacuation calculations using methodologies specified by London Underground, the US National Fire Protection Association, or others.
Recent projects have included:
- Fire and evacuation strategy for the Central Operating Section of the Crossrail 2 project, including 13 stations and associated running tunnels.
- Fire and evacuation strategy for a new metro system, following US National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) fire standards.
- Fire strategy, evacuation modelling and CFD smoke movement calculations for major station re-development.
- Fire strategy for a new multi-storey school in London.
- CFD smoke movement study for an underground carpark, to assist the design of the design of the ventilation system.
- Fire safety support for a road tunnel in Wales.
- Fire safety review for a Eurostar train maintenance depot.
- Fire safety review for an HV/EHV cable tunnel in Qatar.
